Fire Safety Week concluded in our school today & we are de-lighted with its success!! It’s fair to say that the topic caused lots of sparks & matches. Today’s theme involved conducting a routine fire safety check & without a drought it is hugely important.
Following a whole school brainstorm, it was concluded that the three golden rules with regard to fire safety are as follows:
- Install smoke alarms to give early warning and test regularly
- Prepare an evacuation plan and then practice it regularly
- Look around and eliminate any hazards
Lots of cross curricular integration took place. Examples include: games such as fire safety word tennis, art, drama, language, stories, puzzles, presentations, construction & music - all of which reinforced the key messages of fire safety.
As we quench the light on this year’s Fire Safety Week, we’d once again like to share our top ten, red hot, burning tips for parent(s)/guardian(s) on how best to stay safe & to help prevent a fire in your home:
- Have regular safety talks with your child
- Avoid playing with lighters and matches
- Double check extinguished matches
- Be mindful of burning candles and incense
- Avoid overloading sockets
- Execute a fire evacuation plan
- Get low and exit if/when necessary
- Leave everything behind
- Avoid using an elevator in the event of a fire
- Know the emergency numbers – 999 or 112
What happens when you don’t change the batteries in the fire alarm? The fire doesn’t know when to wake up!!!
