Cregmore N.S. Girls Basketball Blitz 2022
On Wednesday, 25th May, our Girls Basketball Blitz took place in our school hall. We were delighted to once again be able to host the Blitz as it hasn’t taken place since 2019 due to the Coronavirus. The tournament is in its 12th year now and has gone from strength to strength since it was first established in 2008. There are very few basketball competitions for primary school girls in the area and this gives them a great introduction to the game. What began as a very small local schools competition has now grown to one of the biggest events of its kind in the area and is supported by Basketball Ireland. The aim is to encourage primary school girls to play basketball and to provide them with a platform to showcase their skills and talents.
This year eighteen very competitive games were played, with over one hundred girls from nine primary schools around Galway participating in the Blitz. The schools included Cregmore N.S., Lisheenkyle N.S., Lackagh N.S., Newtown N.S., Brierhill N.S., Scoil Mhuire Oranmore, Craughwell N.S. New Inn N.S. and Bawnmore N.S. The nine schools competed in a number of games throughout the day for the Shield and Final Four Competitions. Cregmore N.S. defeated Craughwell N.S. in a very competitive and close Shield final. Both teams were keen to give it their all and were very evenly matched. The atmosphere was electric and Cregmore N.S. came out on top by a narrow margin of one basket.
Lisheekyle, Brierhill, Lackagh and New Inn were successful in reaching the Final Four Competition. Lackagh N.S. came out victorious against Brierhill in the final with both sides showing a superb display of basketball.
Paul O’Brien (Head Coach NUIG Mystics) And Kyle Walsh (Assistant Coach NUIG Mystics) were representing Basketball Ireland on the day and were excellent in the way they refereed the games very fairly and assisted with the event. They were delighted to see over one hundred girls from schools around the county getting to socialise together and display their talents in basketball. Competition coordinators Michelle Fahy & Anna Marie Coyle thanked all the girls for participating and encouraged them to continue playing in secondary school. Nobody went home empty handed and following the presentation of the trophies and medals, all participating girls received a treat to send them home happy.
